On Sunday afternoon we went for drive up to the Rheinfall (Rhine Falls). It’s up to the north of Switzerland, on the border with Germany, near Schaffhausen.

It’s pretty epic…

So basically, the 6th most flowingest river in Europe goes round a bend and drops over some rocks, forming the biggest waterfall in Europe – 150 metres wide, 25-metre drop. On the outside of the bend is a little castle, Schlösschen Wörth, and on the inside of the bend is a big castle, Schloss Laufen, under which is a tunnel through which runs the railway, out onto a bridge across the river. Smack bang in the middle of the waterfall itself are a couple of tall rocky outcrops, which you can actually climb onto. From a boat.
It’s quite something to behold.

Here are some photos, to help you behold it, just a little.

It is vast. And expansive.
Aforementioned rocky outcrop. Boat jetty to the left.

There’s a path down from Schloss Laufen, and you can get up close and personal with the waterfall. When it’s running a bit higher, you can actually reach out and touch it.

So much water right there.
Outcrops. Two. See the people on top of the left-hand one.
