Day two of our road trip brings us to Bratislava, Slovakia.
We arrived at our apartment in the evening. Turns out the rooms are all themed after different beverages. Ours was the Jägermeister room!
We spent the next full day exploring the city. The city is slow to awake, with many shops, etc., only opening at 11am or thereabouts, but they stay open rather late at the other end.
There are plenty of things to see: St Martin’s Cathedral, Bratislava Castle, Michael’s Gate, the UFO, and many others. We spent a far bit of time just wandering around the old town.
We were hoping to get a look down in the catacombs beneath St Martin’s, but the were closed for renovations.
From the observation deck of the UFO, you get a great view back across the Danube of the old town.
We’ve made a point of exploring the local meals and treats. The Bratislavský rožok is a delicious croissant-esque pastry, filled with either poppy seeds or nuts.
We ate out that evening at the Slovak Pub. It’s a rough, sprawling place, but warm and friendly, with plenty of local dishes on the menu. The food was exemplary – with cheesy garlic soup served in a loaf, sauerkraut and wurst soup, gnocchi with bacon and onion, potato dumplings with sheep cheese, bacon and cabbage. Wonderful stuff!
