There are Hofladen everywhere. Every farm seems to have one – that is a shop where farmers sell their own, and other, local produce. Fresh, organic, in-season, affordable fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, pressed apple juice, eggs, wine….
Our neighbours here spoke very highly of our local Hofladen so we went for a visit. It’s just a couple of 100 metres down the road. We loved it and have been back a lot since! Ben’s school class visits it weekly to purchase fruit, veggies and cheese for morning tea which the children chop up and share daily. It’s great how they support the local community in this way.
It’s a cool system, there are some scales, a calculator, and an honesty box for payment. Good maths practice for Ben, working out the weight, multiplying it by the $ per kilo etc…
The strawberries are the best I’ve ever tasted! Super sweet and juicy. Same with the apples, sussmost and pretty much everything we’ve tried. I look forward to eating up all our produce so I have an reason to go get more.

Hofladen is such a cool system! And it works both ways: For the farmer to get full retail price and for the consumer to get fresh, wholesome and locally-grown produce.
